LP Review: "Cosmic Reawakening" by Crafteon

Cosmic Reawakening
Speaking of the terrible tings....

This is something that's on my mind and it makes no sense as to why it is. The why is meaningless and the how is what's critical.

Ergo: You're going to hear about it right now for some damned reason.

It's time to let go of the idea that metal is dumb, as in ignorant. The term Heavy Metal was coined to denigrate musicians as dumb neanderthals. Heavy Metal god, Tony Iommi, hated the moniker at first.

On these very pages, death metal, progressive metal, extreme metal, black metal, etc are very much celebrated, but did you know that things like Dune, Dante's Inferno, and now (well wait again) the Ctulu Mythos will also be celebrated?

Crafteon
So, let's all fight back against the idea of metal fans (and artists) being uneducated.

We're a literate bunch. Lord of the Rings, Dungeons & Dragons, and the like, these are not easily understood. One has to try.

But in the end, it's the songs that matter. A band's IQ is meaningless without quality tunes backing it up, sorry, but this is where R.E.M. misses the mark

Crafteon's Cosmic Reawakening isn't an album that's going to reinvent the wheel, but in 2017, that's not really something that needs to be done. If the picture wasn't enough of a hint, let me tell you that this is a black metal record through and through.

It's not a Scandinavian Black Metal album, but something more akin to atmospheric black metal, the supreme form in my humble opinion. It's not exactly that either though. Cosmic Reawakening treads the ground between traditional and atmospheric.

Much like how my review of Canto III had me reading Dante's Inferno, perhaps it's high time I read HP Lovecraft. After all, there was a great episode on his life and work on Stuff You Missed In History Class.

This CD is a DIY project. Crafteon's work without a label is masterful. It's a bit rare to make an album that sounds this great. Even on CD, through the tiny speakers, this album sounds amazing.
